The Treasures of the Berbers: Handcrafted Cushions with Centuries-Old Tradition

Since ancient times, Moroccan Berber shepherds have built their economy around sheep and their wool, which represented the major and primary resource of their territories. With this precious resource, Berber artisans crafted handmade wool rugs and cushions using simple wooden looms placed on the ground. The size of the looms limited the width of the rugs to approximately two meters, a size necessary for a rug to serve as a mattress for the entire family. Consequently, it is exceedingly rare to find an old rug that is not long enough or thick enough.

The Berber cushions are typically derived from the most well-known Berber rugs. Before taking the form of a cushion, a large piece of fabric is cut from a Berber rug and crafted into a cushion cover using an ancient ancestral technique employed by Berber artisans. This technique ensures the creation of warm, robust, and resistant cushions, designed to withstand the harsh conditions of bygone eras.

Cleaning a handmade Berber cushion:

Cleaning a handmade cushion requires delicate care, taking into consideration its composition (wool, cactus silk, fabrics, cotton, etc.). For example, Sabra cushions made of cactus silk should not be immersed in water, as it may cause the natural plant-based dyes to fade.
